This week is National Lightning Safety Awareness Week.  One thing a lot of people don’t think about during a thunderstorm, is lightning.  Lightning strikes the United States 25 million time a year, nearly 47 times a minute, killing 47 people each year and injures hundreds more.  Many of these deaths and injuries are preventable.  National Weather Service Meteorologist, John Woynick, says it can strike even if the storm is not in the area yet:

Each bolt of lightning is hotter than the sun and can reach 50,000 degrees.  A good rule of thumb to remember is :  When thunder roars, go indoors.
