The history of Labor Day is one of blood, sweat and tears. When the Industrial Revolution started in the 1800’s many more people were employed, but working conditions consisted of long days and low pay, and it also, frequently, involved abusive employers. This led to the formation of Labor Unions. A documentary on the History Channel gives further details of the evolution of the Labor Day Holiday:

President Grover Cleveland signed a Bill to make Labor Day a National Holiday in 1894.
