With the beautiful weather we are having, a lot of people are outside, on the trails, doing yard work, camping and other activities. You might want to watch your step and be careful reaching under bushes, around rocks or even flower pots without looking first.
It is copperhead season and Wildlife and Parks is reminding people to watch out for baby copperheads. The babies are born with venom and ready to defend themselve. A mother copperhead gives birth to eight to 10 snakes. So, if you find one, there are probably others around. They can be hard to spot as the snake’s camouflage pattern can blend in while they are resting on dead leaves.
Copperheads have the distinction of having bitten more people in the United States than any other venomous snakes; however, because the amount of venom injected during a bite is not enough to seriously hurt a healthy adult, the bite is rarely fatal. The bite is extremely painful and has the potential to produce a life threatening allergic reaction. So, be careful as you are enjoying the nice weather this weekend.
