The discussion of installing internet fiber within the city of Garnett was discussed at the Anderson County Commission meeting. The commissioners believe that installing the internet fiber infrastructure will entice businesses to come to the Anderson County area, as well as help with remote learning and working from home. The cost of the project is expected to be about $450,000. KwiKom is asking that the City of Garnett and the County Commissioners provide $50,000 apiece toward the project and $100,000 would come from Spark Funding. Commissioners gave verbal agreement toward the project, with the understanding that the City of Garnett would also contribute the $50,000.

Under the contract, Garnett would enter into a franchise agreement with KwiKom and earn a 5% fee on monthly subscriptions for each city fiber customer the company generates. KwiKom would also pay an annual pole fee of $10 per city utility pole it uses to host its fiber cabling.

More discussion is expected at the City Commission Meeting tonight.
