Seventy new law enforcement officers graduated from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center in a ceremony on Friday. The large class size was designed to prevent disruption to Kansas Law Enforcement and to ensure there was no additional delay in training, created by the suspension of on-campus classes in Spring 2020 due to COVID 19. Two Ottawa Police Officers were n the class. Dustin Van Leiden and Kevin Virosteck. Also in the class was Andrew Gonzalez of the Paola Police Department and Christopher Lee with the Miami County Sheriff’s Department.

The 268th also raised over $1,700 for the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Kansas. This money will be going to a project that will benefit children across the state, called “My Backpack”.

The 270th Basic Training Class, starting this week, will feature Franklin County Sheriff Deputy Briley Rivers, who also has been elected Class President. Rivers is a 2001 Graduate of Ottawa University and taught at the elementary level for many years. He began working for the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office as a Reserve Deputy in 2016 and earned is Law Enforcement Chaplain Credentials in 2019.
