Students at Santa Fe Trail High School and Junior High staged a walkout this morning protesting the School District for not working with teachers. A dozen or more teachers are retiring or will be resigning following this school year, after the district implemented “Summit Program Learning” for students. Summit Learning is a free, online tool, described as helping students set individual goals and learn their studies at their own pace.

While some teachers support the program, many educators say they have had enough, one saying nearly every student she has dislikes it greatly and are not doing the work and when kids refuse to learn, you cannot teach them. Another says teachers are no longer valued, trusted or respected in the District. Most parents speaking at the USD 234 School Board Meeting last night say their kids don’t like the program and some mentioned their kids want to drop out of school.

The Board voted 4-3 to move ahead with the program and accepted the teachers resignations.
