On this day, in 1969, the iconic children’s television show “Sesame Street” debuted.
The show has helped teach generations of young children the alphabet and how to count, through live action, sketch comedy, animation and puppetry.
Sesame Street was the brainchild of Joan Cooney, a former Documentary Producer for Public Television. Cooney’s goal was to create a program for preschoolers that was entertaining and educational, while also using television to help underprivileged three to five year olds prepare for kindergarten.
