Services for John (Jack) Bushman, Ottawa, will be at the Westminster Presbyterian Church this afternoon at 1:00.
Jack was a long time Ottawa resident and a Professor at the University of Kansas from 1971 to 2005, earning Professor Emeritus in the Department of Teaching and Leadership in the School of Education. He also taught English in Ottawa Public Schools from 1961 to 1965 and was a member of the USD 290 Board of Education for 12 years and a Professor at Ottawa University from 1965 to 1971.
Jack was Director of the Writing Conference, a non profit organization which he created in 1980 and was Director until 2018. The Organizations Mission was to reduce illiteracy by improving writing and reading skills of young people. He received the Edwin M. Hopkins English Journal Award three years in a row, from 1996 to 1998 and the Ned Fleming Trust Award for Outstanding Classroom Teaching at KU in 2000. He was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and the Assembly on Literature for Adolescents in National Council of Teachers of English.
