Even though the COVID 19 vaccine has arrived in Miami County, the virus has struck hard recently. Four more Miami County residents have died in the past week and hospitalizations are on the uptick. Emergency Management Coordinator, Mark Whelan, says the County has 225 active cases, based on numbers released that day from the Miami County Health Department. He also reported the County has 13 new hospitalizations this week, a record high.
Commissioner Phil Dixon asked what kind of stress the uptick was placing on Miami County’s Emergency Medial Services. Whelan says the Ambulance Service is so busy they are on “status zero” much of the time; which means no ambulances are available and they have to rely o help from other agencies to handle emrgency calls. The County has recorded 2,148 cases since last March and has about a 12 % positivity rate.
On a note of optimism, Whelan reported the Miami County Health Department received a new allotment of COVID vaccine Wednesday morning
