A house fire at 809 Poplar yesterday afternoon, caused heavy damage and displaced a family. The call came in shortly after 1:00 as a structure fire. Ottawa Fire Department Engines One and Two responded and upon arrival saw heavy black smoke and flames shooting from the south side of the two story balloon framed residence. Crews immediately took an offensive position and entered the structure and found fire from the basement to the attic. After a long fight, the fire was deemed under control at 2:40.
The Ottawa Fire Department Ladder Truck was utilized to get to the top of the house and break holes in the roof to allow smoke to vent. This is the third time in recent months the 100 foot extension Ladder Truck has been used at a house fire. Fortunately, no one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported to any of the firefighters. Assistant Fire Chief, Shawn Dillon, said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time and being investigated by Fire Investigators from the Ottawa Fire Department and he reports there was extensive fire damage to the home. Pictures of the fire scene will be posted on the KOFO’s Facebook Page today.
