Another big event coming soon in Anderson County. Officials are finalizing plan for the dedication of the Anderson County Veteran’s Memorial on the Square in Garnett. The event will be held May 31st and will feature live music dedication addresses, Military Honors, and the Laying of a Wreath at the Memorial.

The effort to make the Memorial a reality has taken nearly 10 years. Local Government officials, Historical Society members, VFW and American Legion Post members and civilian volunteers all worked together to design the Memorial. County Commissioners approved a Mill Levy to fund the Memorial Project in 2012 while the committee charged with the project tried to come up with a design and plan. The levy raised $100,000 a year. Private donations came in and engraved bricks sold for the project as a means for community members to take part. There are many amenities on the Memorial, including interactive kiosks. The Memorial Ceremony will be highlighted by former Army Sergeant and Purple Heart Recipient, David Sterling, who was injured in Iraq in 2004.
