Kansas Representative Mark Samsel of Wellsville, made his first appearance in Franklin County District Court this morning and pled Not Guilty to all three counts of Misdemeanor Battery in regard to an incident toward a student at Wellsville High School, while he was working as a substitute teacher. The charges, according to Court Documents, are due to physical altercations against two students.

Franklin County Attorney Brandon Jones requested and was granted, additional Bond Conditions telling him to not violate the Law, have no contact with any alleged victims, have no firearms and not consume any alcohol and drugs. Also, he will be required to obtain a Mental Health Evaluation within the next three weeks at Elizabeth Layton Center in Ottawa.

Samsel has been fired from his substitute teaching role since the April 28th incident. He’s also been asked to not participate in any school-related events, in social media posts and interviews. Samsel has insisted there was no altercation and that the whole event was staged and planned.

His next hearing is scheduled for July 12th at 11:30 in the morning
