The local newspaper has a new owner. The Ottawa Herald is one of 20 newspapers to be sold by Gannett Company to Cherry Road Media. The newspapers, which include five dailies, are published in Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri.

CEO of Cherry Road, Jeremy Gulban, says they plan to bring back focus to local news and offer additional digital solutions to supplement printed newspapers. The company decided late last year to look at the local newspaper industry because they felt there was a need for an infusion of technology from a supportive side as opposed to a competitive side. The newspapers are scattered all across the State, from the Leavenworth Times, to the Ottawa Herald to the Dodge City Daily Globe and points in between.

The Ottawa Herald was founded in 1869. In 1915 it was purchased by Ralph Harris. Harris Publishing sold their chain of newspapers in 2016 to Gatehouse Media, which later merged with the Gannett Company.
