The Frontier Extension District, ECO Tone Forestry and the Kansas Wildlife and Parks are hosting a meeting today on how to control what is now considered a pest… bush honeysuckle. Originally considered an ornamental plant, it was used by pioneers in the 1800’s for landscaping. It greens up early in the Spring and produces pretty red berries. But Frontier Extension Crop Production and Farm Management Agent, Ryan Schaub, says it smothers out native species of plants and is becoming a problem:
Schaub says they will be talking about a new way to control bush honeysuckle involving the use of a backpack mist blower and pesticide. The meeting will be held at 2:00 this afternoon in Downtown Princeton at the Prairie Spirit Trail.
