Today marks the 80th Anniversary of the attacks on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, that killed over 2,400 American Naval personnel and destroyed most of the Pacific Fleet. The attack was well planned by the Japanese and a total surprise to the United States, who was technically at peace with Japan.
Hundreds of Japanese fighters descended on the base from all angles. the Japanese plan was simple: Destroy the Pacific Fleet. That way, the Americans would not be able to fight back as Japan’s armed forces spread across the South Pacific.
Lynn “Doc” Munger, was at the Naval Hospital. He described the scene in an interview on the History Channel in 2009:
More than 2,400 Americans died in the attack.
