The final Miami County Legislative Breakfast was held Saturday in Paola. Legislator Representatives, Samantha Poetter, Parshall and Mark Samsel and Senators Molly Baumgardner and Caryn Tyson were on hand. One issue discussed involved the elimination of the food sales tax. Senator Tyson asked those n attendance if they would rather see the elimination of food sales tax, property tax, or income tax. Tyson said usually property tax gets the highest number of votes, followed by income tax, then food sales tax. She added that she supports Senate Bill 339 which provides for a zero percent state rate for sales of food and food ingredients, but she also wants to look at the big picture and make common sense decisions about state finances.

Another item involved K-68 Highway from Ottawa to the Missouri State Line. Senator Baumgardner says it is the largest stretch of undivided highway in the State and the most dangerous. She would like to see at least the installation of cement dividers like the ones used during recent bridge work on Highway 69. She says the 159th Street exit off U. S. 69 was done before K-68 because private money was involved and a state highway should not demand private money.
