With Severe Weather Season coming up, Governor Laura Kelly wants Kansans to be prepared. She has issued a Proclamation declaring next week as Severe Weather Awareness Week.
The National Weather Service will conduct a State-wide tornado drill at 10:00 Tuesday morning. Everyone is encouraged to participate in the the drill, by practicing seeking secure, safe shelter from a tornado. This year, to avoid any confusion to the public, a live tornado warning will not be sent out on the NOAA Weather Radio; instead, there will be a routine Weekly Test message asking people to practice sheltering.
Officials in Ottawa say the tornado sirens will sound and all area residents, businesses and schools, are urged to treat the drill as if it were an actual Tornado Warning.
Last year, there were no deaths attributed to tornadoes in the State, thanks in part to our early warning systems and the preparedness measures taken by Kansans across the State.
All week, KOFO will be airing news stories about different types of severe weather; ranging from tornadoes, lightning, hail, wind and flood safety. Also, Tuesday night at 6:30, the National Weather Service will hold a Storm Spotter talk at the Ottawa Memorial Auditorium.
