Recently the Avian Influenza was found in a backyard flock in Franklin County. It was the first case in Kansas. In light of the recent announcement, the Kansas Department of Agriculture is asking all poultry owners to contact them. They are overseeing the State’s response to confirmed cases of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza, known as HPAIU in Kansas. Part of KDA’s response effort as they work to stop the spread of HPAI is to get a clear understanding of how many susceptible birds are near any infected location and make sure poultry owners are familiar with the symptoms of HPAI and what steps they should be taking to protect their flock.
KDA says it’s critical for them to know how many birds are at risk of exposure, so they need to speak with anyone who owns poultry who owns poultry who lives within a 10-20 mile distance of the infected location. Anyone with any type of poultry is urged to call or email the Kansas Department of Agriculture and let them know how many birds you have and where they are located.
