A tragic crash in Texas yesterday killed six members of the University of the Southwest Gold Team and the Head Coach. Tyler James played his collegiate golf at Ottawa University. He was a member of the “Our Gold Team” from 2014 to 2016, before transferring to Howard Payne University. This was his first season as head couch at Southwest.

The van, which he was driving, was headed back to the school in New Mexico following a golf tournament in Texas. According to police, about 8:15 Tuesday night, the driver of a pickup truck heading south, veered into the north bound lane and struck the van carrying the men’s and women’s golf teams, head on. Both vehicles caught fire after the crash. The driver and passenger of the truck were also killed.

The crash is being investigated by the Texas Highway Patrol’s West Texas Region District Crash Team and the National Transportation Safety Board is sending a 12 member “Go Team” to the crash site; including experts in human performance, vehicle and motor carrier factors and accident reconstruction.
