The rising cost of gasoline the past several weeks has affected a lot of people, from farmers and ranchers, commuters, school districts and government entities. Take USD 365, Anderson County Schools. Superintendent Don Blome, says the District budgeted $123,000 for bus and other transportation costs this year and have used over $74000 of that. He thinks they may be ok; but, if the cost of gas continues to rise, the district may have to shift some other funds into transportation to cover costs.

Law enforcement has the same predicament. Garnett Police Chief, Kurt King, says he ran over the fuel budget for 2021, even with fewer overall miles. He says he expects they will spend close to $27,000 in fuel this year. The City Commission will have to cover the overage some how. Cutting back on patrols is the alternative.

For the County, Sheriff Vern Valentine says he has had a mileage restriction in place for several years. So far, it’s working. He’s hoping for a quiet year with fewer jail transports and medical costs, plus, he has asked deputies to run more stationary radar.
