Miami County is storm ready. The designation signifies the County has worked with the National Weather Service to prepare for adverse weather through the weather service’s Storm Ready Program. Andy Bailey, the weather service’s Warning Coordination Meteorologist and Miami County Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Fleming, have been working together on a Storm Ready Project, designed to assist county personnel in the event of threatening weather, including preparation, awareness and storm sirens.
Miami County has 15 sirens, four in Louisburg, nine in Paola and four in Osawatomie. Officials warn that sirens are meant to be heard outside, not necessarily indoors. Fleming says they have been strategically placed throughout the county in areas where people are likely to gather outside, like campgrounds at Hillsdale Lake and mobile home parks. They are also in rural communities, such as Hillsdale, Block, Fontana, Beagle and Bucyrus. You can also be notified of emergency situations in Miami County by using the county’s notification system, called Everbridge. Residents can sign up for the service by following the link on the Miami County Government Website.
