Thirty one years ago, Wayne Minckley was hired as a jailer for the Miami County Sheriff’s Office and after nine month accepted an offer to become a Road Patrol Officer. Thirty one years later, he is set to retire, today, as Undersheriff for Miami County.
Growing up on the family farm i Anderson County, Wayne always kept Law Enforcement in the back of his mind, as a career possibility, ever since he saw a Kansas Highway Patrol newspaper ad when he was about 11 years old. Interestingly, he had law enforcement roots in his family. His grandfather’s brother, Olin Minckley, was the Sheriff in Franklin County in the 1930’s and was the first motorcycle police officer in Ottawa.
Today, his last day after 31 years of serving the people of Miami County, he retires— 11 years to the day his mentor, former Undersheriff Mark Schmidt retired. It has already been announced that Captain Matt Kelly will become the new Undersheriff, serving alongside his dad, Sheriff Frank Kelly.
The public is invited to a Retirement Reception for Minckley, from 10:00 until 2:00 today at Town Square in Paola.
