A Louisburg 8th grader finished in the top five at the Sunflower State Spelling Bee recently. Wyatt Heiern’s shot at the title ended in the eighth round when he spelled the word “ameritus” incorrectly. Wyatt didn’t go down without a fight. He had practiced over 3,000 words before the competition and though he was a bit disappointed he didn’t finish higher than fifth, he says it was a great experience. It was the first time he had competed in a spelling bee at school; and this was his one and only spelling bee. You can’t compete past the 8th grade.

He says he loves spelling, reading and literature and it gave him a chance to do something he was good at. One thing that was pretty cool… U. S. Representative, Jake LaTurner, who represents Kansas’s 2nd Congressional District, sent Wyatt a congratulatory note for his performance in the State Spelling Bee.

Congratulations Wyatt!!
