Twenty-two teams from 18 schools will travel to Topeka Saturday, with their sights set on winning a State title in the Kansas Kid Wind Challenge. What’s that you ask? It’s a competition that challenges team members to work together to design, build and test a wind turbine using materials of their choice. It is then tested in a 44 x 48 inch wind tunnel at winds speeds of 8 to 12 miles per hour. The teams are scored on performance and efficiency, a knowledge quiz, an instant challenge and a presentation to judges that explains their process.
The Paola Middle School Team, known as “Lizard Kingdom” is competing in the 4th through 8th grade division and two teams from Paola High School are competing, the “Dynamic Downums” and the “Potato Guys”. Also competing is a team from Baldwin, “The Last Airbender” and a team from Osage City.
