A local girl scored big recently in the Equifest Rodeo competition in Salina. Breakaway Roping was, for the first time a featured attraction at the event. In Breakaway roping, a calf is roped around the neck with a lariat tied by a lightweight string to the roper’s saddle horn. When the calf is roped, it tightens the string, which breaks, the stopwatch clicks off and fastest time wins.
The big winner this year was Garnett’s own 15 year old Brylee Zook, who won a total of $1,650. She won $1,000 for having the fastest roping time of 10.29 seconds and another $50 for a tie for the second fastest time in the Junior Division. Another area cowgirl, Madison Scott of Pomona, was second place overall, taking home over $1,500 in prize money.
