You get a call from a number that appears to be from your utility company and they tell you that you have to pay your utilities within a half hour or someone will be there to shut the power off. You can pay now by phone. What do you do? Evergy is reporting that customers have been receiving calls from someone who claims to represent them and is presenting people with an ultimatum. Pay now or lose your power. If you receive such a call, the simplest thing to do is hang up immediately.
The scammers are asking for personal information, such as bank account numbers or credit card information. Evergy officials say they will never call and ask for payment immediately. They will always allow customers a plan to get their bill paid. Another option if you get a scam call, hang up and call your utility to check on your bill yourself. If you feel you have been a victim of this scam, notify your local law enforcement agency immediately.
