We all know how important shipping by truck is here and around the Nation; but, an overlooked and equally important aspect of shipping farm and ranch products are railroads. Freight rail traffic has become an issue around the Nation and was the subject of a National Surface Transportation Board Hearing yesterday. USDA’s Rod Bain says Deputy Secretary Jewel Bronaugh testified at the hearing saying rail has become a serious issue.
The Deputy Secretary added that fertilizer and AG commodities are not the commodities to deprioritize in regard to announced rail car cutbacks by companies designed to improve rail traffic, especially entering the growing season.
