The Kansas Highway Patrol is teaming up with the U. S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Region 7 States, including Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri and Nebraska law enforcement to inform the driving public about important lifesaving “MOVE OVER” Laws in effect across the Region and country. The law, requiring motorists to slow down and if safe to do so, move over, when passing emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated, has not reached all drivers yet.
Since 2017 there have been 149 law enforcement officers killed in traffic related incidents. The goal is simple: They want all drivers to know, when they see flashing lights on the side of the road, they are required to move over. It’s the law.
Last week, two KHP Patrol cars were hit by drivers not moving over while the troopers were assisting motorists. One of those, south of Topeka; the other in western Kansas. Fortunately neither trooper was seriously injured.
