This week is National Police Week and one major purpose is to pay tribute to those who died in the line of duty. Sheriff Jeff Richards talked about one of the local fallen officers, Sam Smith:
Smith was killed in a car crash in July 2010 while responding to an emergency call. The Ottawa Police Department has had one other officer die in the line of duty. Captain Robert Cowden died of a heart attack in 1963 while assisting with riot control in Garnett.
