It looks like at least a partial solution may have been found to allow a developer to convert the existing Econo-Lodge in South Ottawa, into a multi family housing complex. The project was delayed when the proposed zoning classification contained a three acre minimum size; the Econo-Lodge is around two acres. At the Ottawa Planning Commission Meeting, Community Development Director, Michael Hall noted that the solution may lie in treating mixed use residential, the zoning desired for the Econo-Lodge Project, differently from mixed use commercial:
The proposed solution for residential would not impose a minimum size for projects, but project that is put in the commercial category would still contain a one acre minimum size. The zoning change still has to be approved by the Ottawa Zoning Commission before the Econo-Lodge project can move forward.
