The National Weather Service has confirmed that four tornados touched down in our area Tuesday night, June 7, 2022, with two in KOFO’s listening area. After reviewing radar data an damage field, two EF-0 tornadoes were confirmed in Miami County. The first started about two miles southeast of Hillsdale and traveled nearly 10 miles, ending three miles southeast of Louisburg. The second, began four miles south of Wagstaff and traveled over nine miles, ending four miles northwest of Drexel, Missouri.
Some people were concerned about the lack of warning; however, the National Weather Service says Miami County never entered into a severe thunderstorm warning or a tornado watch or warning. Storm sirens were not activated in Miami County because of this. Storm sirens are activated when either a storm spotter observes rotation in the sky, the NWS notifies us of radar indicated rotation or a tornado warning is issued. None of these occurred.
The other two tornados, EF-1 tracked 14 miles from Overland Park across the State Line, down 95th Street and another, an EF-2 tracked a path across the Northland of KC.
Heavy thunderstorms are possible tonight, June 9, 2022. Stay tuned to KOFO for up-to-the-minute severe weather coverage in our area.
