Another very nice weekend and many people might be thinking of heading to the lake once again. If you are heading to Lake Garnett, be aware that the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has determined that blue green algae is present, particularly in the northeast area of Lake Garnett. The lake is under a blue green algae warning and the City of Garnett is once again discouraging contact with the water. No swimming, wading, skiing or jet skis and be sure to not allow pets in the water. If you do come in contact with the water, wash with clean water afterward. If you are fishing, make sur you clean the fish well and discard the guts afterwards.
A harmful algae bloom may look like scum or paint floating on the water. It may be colored blue, bright green or red. If you have any questions or would like to see a complete list of lakes in Kansas that have watches or warnings, check out the KDHE website or Facebook page.
