On Friday, the U. S. Supreme Court, in a decision overturning the nearly 50 year old case of Roe Versus Wade, ruled that it’s up to each state to determine what, if any restrictions, to impose on abortion access. That ruling raises the stakes for an upcoming Constitutional Amendment Vote in Kansas. Abortion Rights in Kansas currently fall under the protection of a 2019 Kansas Supreme Court ruling that found the State Constitution includes the right to an abortion, but that ruling spurred the Republican-dominated Kansas Legislature, to push for a change to the State Constitution. Kansas voters will decide on August 2 whether to amend the State Constitution with a Provision that says it doesn’t promise access to abortion. All Kansas voters may cast a ballot on the issue in that primary, regardless of whether they’re affiliated with a party.
If the Amendment is approved, those State Abortion Protections would be tossed out, but not banned immediately. That would allow lawmakers to pass more restrictions.
One important note officials are stressing… anyone can vote on the Constitutional Amendment. Voters who are not Republican or Democrat, such as Libertarian Party voters, or those who chose not to be affiliated with a political party, will be provided a ballot with only the Constitutional Amendment Question on it.
