An Anderson County resident is running for Governor. Republicans in Kansas will choose between longtime party favorite, Attorney General Derek Schmidt and Kincaid Freight Company Owner, Arlyn Briggs, in the August GOP Primary for Kansas Governor. Both Schmidt and Briggs filed as Republicans to face incumbent Governor Laura Kelly in the November General Election. Katie Sawyer, a former staffer for Senator Roger Marshall is Schmidt’s running mate for Lieutenant Governor. Lance Berland of Abilene, who ran unsuccessfully in 2020 for the U. S. Senate, is number two on Brigg’s campaign. Kelly and running mate David Toland are unopposed in the Democratic Primary. Retired local veterinarian Fred Gardner filed for election to the Kansas Legislature. He’ll face off against the incumbent Republican in the 9th State Representative District.

The winners of the Primary will join three candidates for the Garnett City Commission. Mark Locke, Troy Armstrong and Justin Thompson have all filed to fill the seat held by Garnett Mayor, Greg Gwin.
