Garnett City officials have been alerted to the possibility of Summer electricity shortages, as the heat continues to build across the Region. Garnett City Manager, Travis Wilson told City Commissioners that the Southwest Power Pool issued a Resource Alert and Advisory last week regarding the hot weather and increased air conditioner use.
The Power Pool oversees the bulk electric grid and wholesale power market, of which Garnett and many other cities purchase electricity. The Alert says hot weather high demand and projected low levels of wind for wind farms had lowered the amount of electricity that could be available. Wilson says he has not approached the Commission asking for a city wide request to reduce electrical consumption, but that move would be likely if more alerts come down from the Power Pool. He says it’s possible they may ask residents of Garnett to conserve in order to avoid possible rolling blackouts.
