The National Suicide Hotline number becomes three digits today… 988. A number easier to remember than the previous 10 digit number. Kansas Senator, Jerry Moran and Wisconsin Senator, Tammy Baldwin co-authored the Bill to start the process of creating a National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Hotline. Moran says now, more than ever, the entire Nation will benefit from greater access to critical suicide prevention and mental health services and, just like dialing 911 in an emergency, the three digit 988 number will provide immediate, professional help for those struggling with mental illness.
That number goes into effect today, just as the Center for Disease control released information saying that suicide is the leading cause of death and the number of people who think about or attempt suicide is even higher. In 2020 an estimated 12.2 million American adults planned a suicide attempt and 1.2 million attempted suicide.
