Remember a couple years ago, when along with the pandemic and all kinds of other bad things, we were introduced to the “murder hornet”? We derived its name due to its habit of decapitating other bees and killing the entire hive in just minutes. It’s over two inches long and has a wing span of over three inches. It was originally called the Asian giant hornet. Well, now it’s getting a new name. Scientists are now calling it the Northern Giant Hornet. Why? Scientists say the name didn’t do much to identify the stinger, since all hornets are native to Asia, but they were also concerned it could stir up anti-Asian sentiment.
It is invasive to North America but fortunately, hives have only been found in British Columbia and a small portion of Washington State.
