The GOP Primary for Kansas Treasurer was too close to call on election night and remained a tight race early Wednesday afternoon with just over 300 votes separating the candidates, according to unofficial final election results posted on the Kansas Secretary of State’s website. Republicans Steven Johnson and Caryn Tyson were neck and neck, with Johnson narrowly leading in vote count yesterday afternoon. Provisional ballots have not been recorded and mail-in ballots postmarked by election day will be counted if they arrive by tomorrow. The close results have triggered a new Provision in State Law that requires all 105 counties to audit an additional 10% of precincts for the vote. This means that every county will have to convene and hand count all the extra precincts by hand and compare them to the machine totals. If they don’t match, more audits will be ordered. The Kansas Secretary of State Deputy of Election, Bryan Caskey, says the race isn’t over and likely won’t be called for some time. Neither candidate would comment, both citing they were waiting on the mail in ballot results.
