The first weekend in August looks to be a good one to hit the lake and relax a bit, maybe get some relief from the extreme heat by taking a dip in the cool water. If you are heading to the lake, you’ll need to know that blue-green algae alerts are still in effect for some area lakes affected by the potentially dangerous algae blooms.
There is a warning issued for Louisburg Lake in Miami County; Watch statues for Carbondale Lake and Melvern Outlet Pond in Osage County, as well as for Crystal Lake in Anderson County.
It is very important to avoid water that is bright green or has scum, a paint-like surface, or floating blue-green clumps. Pets or livestock that swim in, drink the water, or eat dried algae may become seriously ill or die. Officials are asking that if you are in contact with the water, wash off as soon as possible and keep your eyes on pets, keeping them away from the water.
