Human remains recovered near Lawrence in January have been identified at Guy Wayne Collins, who had been listed as missing since July 9, 2021. A Kansas Bureau of Investigation analysis confirmed the identity of the remains.
Collins was released from the Douglas County Correctional Facility on July 6, 2021. His family contacted the Sheriff’s Office two days later when they learned of his release, but had no contact with him. On January 31st of this year, two residents walking in the 1700 block of North 12-50 Road noticed remains near a creek and alerted the Sheriff’s Office, who confirmed the remains were human. They searched the area and located additional bones near the water.
A forensic anthropologist assisted in the investigation. At this time, no foul play is suspected in Collins’ death.
