It’s a busy and hectic time for most people right now. As the start of a new school year comes around, parents may not think of some basic safety issues. The Kansas Highway Patrol, Safe Kids Kansas and the Department of Education are teaming to help parents tell kids about safety tips. One of the biggest risks these days in inattentiveness of both drivers and pedestrians. If your kids are walking to school, remind them to put the phones down, especially when crossing the street. The KHP says making eye contact with drivers before crossing is important. If the kids are on a bus, teach then to only use devices while they are on the bus and not while waiting on or exiting the bus.
Another important safety tip is to stress to the kids about obeying all traffic signals. Cross the street at a corner or a crosswalk only; and parents, if you or your teen is driving, put the phone down, slow down and make sure each child has a car seat, booster seat or seat belt on.
