The study, by Nice RX, revealed the extent of medical debt in the U. S. by looking at the states with the most and least debt as well as how ethnicity, age household income, insurance coverage and disability status. The total cost of medical debt in Kansas is around $1.2 million, which is the 24th highest in the U. S.. Americans aged 75 and over have the highest level of medical debt at $25,510; but, medical debt is most prevalent in those age 45 to 54 years, with 20% having debt.
Twenty percent of black Americans have medical debt which is the highest in the U. S. while Asian people have the lowest prevalence at 8.9%. Non-Hispanic white Americans have the highest average medical debt at $14,540. The state with the highest average medical debt per person is Wyoming, at just over $6,500.
