The Miami County Sheriff’s Office has provided further details about the drowning incident at Hillsdale Lake on Sunday. First responders were called to the Marina at Hillsdale Lake just before 2:00 Sunday afternoon, for a report of an unresponsive person. Twenty year old Michael Giesbrecht of Lane, was found face down in the water, without a life preserver, about 15 feet offshore. He was taken ashore and bystanders administered life saving measures until EMS arrived. He was transported to Olathe Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Upon investigation, it was found Michael had docked a jet ski at the small water craft dock while the owner parked the vehicle and trailer.
It’s believed that an underlying medical condition may have contributed to his death and no foul play is suspected. The water in the area he was found, was less than five feet deep. The investigation is ongoing by the Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks.
