An Ottawa Police Officer was forced to shoot a dog that was attacking him Saturday, September 9. Early Saturday afternoon, officers responded to a report of a canine attacking another canine in the 500 block of North Cherry. When the officer arrived, the owner of the attacking canine was attempting to put it back in its own yard. According to a media release from the Ottawa Police Department, the canine broke free from its collar and owner and charged toward the officer. The officer retreated about 30 feet and when the canine was less than five feet away, discharged one round from his handgun, striking the canine. The animal was taken to a local veterinary hospital for treatment.
The owner of the attacking dog was issued a citation for pit bull prohibited in the City Limits, harboring a vicious animal, animal at large and no city registration. The owner of the other canine was issued a citation for no city registration and no proof of vaccination.
The officer was not injured in the attack.
