IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN TO THE KANSAS CITY ZOO LATELY, YOU’RE MISSING OUT. NEXT YEAR WILL BE AN EVEN BIGGER YEAR FOR THEM. THEY ARE EXPECTED TO OPEN A NEW $77 MILLION AQUARIUM ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND OF 2023. THE HUGE BUILDING WILL HOLD 600 THOUSAND GALLONS OF WATER. THE NEW SHARK TANK WAS JUST INSTALLED AN FILLED WITH FRESH WATER TO CHECK FOR LEAKS. IT WILL BE DRAINED AND FILLED WITH SALT WATER.
ZOO OFFICIALS SAY EVERY TANK IN THE NEW AQUARIUM WILL NEED A DIFFERENT SALT LEVEL FOR THE MARINE LIFE INSIDE THE TANK TO SURVIVE. IT WILL ALL BE CONTROLLED BY PUMPS IN THE BASEMENT, WHICH THE PUBLIC WILL NEVER SEE. SIX DIFFERENT HABITATS WILL ALLOW ZOO VISITORS AN UP-CLOSE AND PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, BEGINNING AT THE WARM-WATER SHORE HABITAT AND TRAVELING “DEEPER” THROUGH MANGROVE FORESTS, SANDY SHORES, TROPICAL LAGOONS, AND CORAL REEFS. THEN THEY’LL “ASCEND” THROUGH A KELP FOREST AND END AT A COLD-WATER ROCKY SHORE. EACH HABITAT WILL SHOWCASE A VARIETY OF FASCINATING OCEAN LIFE, IMMERSING VISITORS IN THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING AT THE OCEAN.
