LAWRENCE POLICE SHOT AND KILLED A MAN IN EAST LAWRENCE LATE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON. OFFICERS WERE CALLED TO A HOME IN THE 1700 BLOCK OF EAST 21ST STREET FOR A REPORT OF A BURGLARY IN PROGRESS. WHILE ON SCENE, A MAN CAME OUT OF THE RESIDENCE AND PULLED OUT A HANDGUN POINTING IT AT THE OFFICERS. THREE OF THE OFFICERS AT THE SCENE FIRED THEIR WEAPONS. THE MAN HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS 43-YEAR-OLD MICHAL BLANCK, OF LAWRENCE. OFFICERS ENTERED THE NEARBY HOME WITH SHIELDS AND CLEARED IT WITH SWAT MANEUVERS SHORTLY AFTER THE SHOOTING.
NO SUSPECT DESCRIPTION WAS GIVEN OVER THE POLICE SCANNER. LAWRENCE POLICE HAD BEEN CALLED TO THE SAME HOME SATURDAY MORNING TO CHECK SOMEONE’S WELFARE. THE LAWRENCE POLICE DEPARTMENT CALLED THE KANSAS BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION TO THE SCENE AND THEY WILL BE HANDLING THE INVESTIGATION. A SPOKESPERSON FOR THE KBE, MELISSA UNDERWOOD SAYS NO OFFICERS WERE INJURED AND MORE DETAILS WOULD BE RELEASED AFTER THE INVESTIGATION IS COMPLETE
