AS THE DEER RUT, OR MATING SEASON, SHIFTS INTO FULL SWING YOU’RE GOING TO SEE MORE DEER ON THE MOVE, AND THAT MEANS, IN THE ROADS. TRAVELING THROUGH PASTURES, ROADWAYS, RIVERS AND STREAMS, IT SAID MALE WHITE-TAILED AND MULE DEER WILL START AN ALMOST MONTH-LONG HUNT FOR A SUITABLE MATE, STOPPING FOR VERY LITTLE, INCLUDING DRIVERS. THE KANSAS HIGHWAY PATROL WANTS ALL DRIVERS TO BE SAFE. THEY SAY IF AN ANIMAL IS IN FRONT OF YOU ON THE ROAD, IT’S ACTUALLY BETTER TO HIT THE ANIMAL AND NOT SWERVE TO AVOID IT, AND, SLOW DOWN. LIEUTENANT CANDICE BRESHEARS:

BE EXTRA CAUTIOUS AT DAWN AND DUSK, AS DEER ARE MORE ACTIVE, AND IF YOU SEE ONE, THERE ARE PROBABLY OTHERS. DRIVE SLOWER AND MORE CAREFULLY NEAR WOODED AREAS AND WATER SOURCES LIKE STREAMS AND PONDS, AND ALWAYS REMEMBER TO BUCKLE UP.
