THE PAOLA CITY COUNCIL WELCOMED A NEW MEMBER RECENTLY. DEBORAH HAYES WAS SWORN IN AT THE OCTOBER 11TH CITY COUNCIL MEETING, REPRESENTING WARD NUMBER 2, WHICH WAS VACATED WHEN TRENT UPSHAW ANNOUNCED HE WAS MOVING OUT OF THE DISTRICT BOUNDARIES.

THE CITY ENCOURAGED PEOPLE TO SUBMIT LETTERS IF THEY WERE INTERESTED IN THE POSITION AND HAYES WAS THE ONLY PERSON TO RESPOND. THE COUNCIL MAY HAVE TO TAKE A SIMILAR ACTION FOLLOWING THE NOV. 8 ELECTION. UPSHAW WAS RUNNING UNOPPOSED, AND HIS NAME REMAINS THE ONLY ONE ON THE BALLOT FOR WARD 2. IF THERE IS NOT A SUCCESSFUL WRITE-IN CAMPAIGN, UPSHAW WILL WIN THE ELECTION, AND THE SEAT WILL BE VACATED ONCE AGAIN. THEY DO HAVE THE OPTION TO REAPPOINT HAYES.
