REPRESENTATIVE SHARICE DAVIDS, ALONG WITH OFFICIALS FROM THE KANSAS DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE AND PARKS, WERE ON HAND SATURDAY AT THE MILE ZERO TRAILHEAD OF THE FLINT HILLS TRAIL IN OSAWATOMIE. THE OCCASION, TO OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCE THAT THE TRAILHEAD RECEIVED A $24 MILLION FEDERAL GRANT FOR EXPANSION OF THE TRAIL.
THE “REBUILDING AMERICA INFRASTRUCTURE WITH SUSTAINABILITY AND EQUITY” GRANT WILL HELP MAKE INFRASTRUCTURE IMPROVEMENTS ON OVER 40 MILES OF THE TRAIL AND OPEN 27 NEW MILES OF TRAIL, FROM COUNCIL GROVE TO HERINGTON. DAVIDS SAID THE FLINT HILL TRAIL NOT ONLY PROVIDES A SAFE, BEAUTIFUL, AND CONTINUOUS STRETCH OF LAND FOR PEDESTRIANS AND BICYCLISTS, BUT ALSO DIRECTLY BENEFITS THE LOCAL ECONOMY.
THE CITY OF OSAWATOMIE IS INVESTING IN THE TRAIL IN BELIEF THAT THOSE USING IT CAN BE DRAWN INTO THE DOWNTOWN CORRIDOR AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SHOPS AND RESTAURANTS IN THE AREA AND GIVING THE LOCAL ECONOMY A BIG BOOST.
