Fall is one of the most dangerous times to be on the road. The annual deer “rut”, or mating season, has begun. More and more deer/vehicle accidents are reported everyday. So far in October, Franklin County has recorder 42 such accidents and this isn’t even the peak month. Former Undersheriff, Rick Geist, says drivers need to be very aware, both in town and outside of town and keep their eyes on the sides of the road.

The number of deer crashes in Kansas rose in 2021 to over 10,000, after being down the year before. It was pandemic related, officials contribute it to fewer people being on the road. Five people died in deer-related accidents, another 500 injured. Franklin County reported 100 last year, with 12 injuries. The county has seen 42 such accidents so far in October alone.
